Surf trips bring us joy, but how do we balance that joy with the heavy carbon footprint generated by international travel?
Inspired by creators like Yvon Chouinard, we strive to be stewards of the coastal communities we market to surf tourists.
We live in a world in which traveling has never been easier, and this is both a blessing and a curse. Overtourism can undermine the beauty and magic that attracted us to surfing destinations in the first place—and have unexpected consequences for local communities.
Surf trips bring us joy, but how do we balance that joy with the heavy carbon footprint generated by international travel? We want to inspire surfers to reduce their environmental footprint and explore ways to give back to local communities when traveling. For every Wavecation trip you book, we will send you a list of ideas, tips, and recommendations for how to support your chosen beach paradise.
The Wavecation Pledge
Wavecation will allocate 1% of revenue to fund ocean preservation and vetted community enrichment initiatives in the coastal towns you visit.
When I explore new destinations I will strive to tread lightly, leave no trace, and through my actions leave a positive impact. This could be picking up trash when I walk by it, engaging in a thoughtful conversation with a local, or sharing a wave of goodwill and a smile with a fellow surfer. I pledge to honor, uplift, and protect the precious resources of coastal communities for the enjoyment of future generations.
How will this work?
At the end of every year, we will work together with select Wavecation ambassador hosts to spearhead change. We pledge to donate 1% of all revenue to fund local initiatives in the communities that generated that revenue. We will look to our local partners to determine their greatest areas of need—whether they be safe drinking water projects, recycling programs, educational and healthcare initiatives, or anything else that has a direct and positive impact on the community’s well-being.
We’ll start small, initially grouping individual towns into larger regions until funds for specific towns have grown enough to support local projects. Although we'll be launching on a micro level, this project is a big part of who we want to be as a company, and we look forward to expanding it in the future.
